マールボロでNZ素材にこだわり抜いたプレミアムクラフトジン

ニュージーランドで世界的に有名なワイン産地・マールボロの中心に位置する「エレメンタルディスティラーズ（蒸留所）」は、ベン・レゲットによって設立されたプレミアムクラフトジンの蒸留所です。

ニュージーランドのクラウディベイ近隣で生まれ育ったベンは、海外へ渡り14年間をEUとUKのスピリッツ業界に身を投じました。カクテルバーテンダーとしてキャリアをスタートし、マネージメントやコンペティションも経験。コニャックやスコッチのブランドアンバサダーとしても活躍し、スピリッツ関連の執筆活動にも携わりました。その後、自分の蒸留所を立ち上げるという夢を叶えるために、イギリス人の妻とともに故郷へと戻ります。蒸留所の信念は、すべての素材がどこで、誰によって、どのように育てられたのかが完全に追跡ができ、明らかであること。その植物を最もよく知る作り手と綿密に連携して、一番状態の良い旬の時期に収穫し、地元の素材でニュージーランドを表現するクラフトジンをつくることです。

蒸留所の立ち上げにあたり、4年間にわたって小規模な蒸留を繰り返し、中心となるレシピを練り上げました。様々なボタニカルで試行錯誤を重ねたオリジナルレシピです。準備期間中はマールボロのワイナリーでも働きながら知見を深めていきました。

ジンの蒸留家になるための資格は存在しませんが、ベンはWSET（ワイン＆スピリッツ教育機関）とIBD（醸造家＆蒸留家協会）を取得しています。WSETに関しては、ニュージーランドでただ一人、WSETスピリッツをレベル3（現在スピリッツの最高レベル）まで教える資格を保有し、ニュージーランドのワイン＆スピリッツスクールにてJane Skilton MWと共に講師も務めています。

蒸留所には「The Gin Shack」というテイスティングルームとバースペースを併設しています。宿泊できるコテージもあり、マールボロの中心からプレミアムなクラフトジンの楽しさを伝えています。
